Ann Scales is director of communications in the Office of the President at the University of Massachusetts, and formerly director of communications at the Boston Public Health Commission.  Ann spent 25 years in the newspaper business as a reporter and editor at major dailies in St. Louis, Dallas, and Boston, including nearly 13 years at The Boston Globe, where she was a metro reporter, national political correspondent, White House reporter, editorial writer, newsroom recruiter, deputy features editor, and founding editor of the Style & Arts section. Ann is a graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., and owes her success to high school journalism workshops that leveled the playing field for inner-city students like her and helped pay her way through college.
