Debbie Nguyen, Executive Director

Debbie Nguyen comes to Alray Scholars Program with over a decade of experience in nonprofits. Immediately prior to Alray Scholars Programs, Debbie was the Chief of Staff at Foster America, a national organization focused on improving the foster care system. She also has provided strategy consulting to nonprofits and foundations, designed and implemented college access and success programming for first-generation college students, and coached youth aging out of foster care on securing and maintaining employment. Outside of her full-time work, Debbie volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boston Tax Help Coalition, and Girls Aspire. She also serves on the Board of Directors of local nonprofits Building Audacity and Root Cause. Christina Joseph, Program Manager

Christina Joseph graduated from Framingham State University in 2017 with hard work and the support of the Alray Program. As an Alray alum and Boston native who has returned to serve as our first Program Manager, Christina showcases the power of community and the importance of giving back. She has worked with a number of local non-profits coordinating youth development and mentoring programs. Christina now oversees the Alumni Council, Alray’s inaugural group of graduate leaders. Elaina Curtis, Program Manager

Elaina Curtis, Program Manager

Elaina Curtis graduated from Worcester State University in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and most recently from Salem State University in 2023 with a master’s in higher education in student affairs. She is passionate about supporting students in their college endeavors, especially since she had her own difficulty transitioning to college. As a Boston Public Schools alumna herself, she is excited to support Alray scholars. Holly Tenbrook, Bookkeeper

Holly has been working with Alray since 2018. She has over 20 years of accounting & finance experience in various industries. She is a proud alumna of Pembroke Public Schools (MA) and Bridgewater State University. When she is not focused on work, Holly enjoys quality time with her family and friends. Daniela Romero, Intern

Daniela Romero is a dedicated student at Bunker Hill Community College, where she is pursuing a degree in business with a minor in data analytics. Beyond her academic pursuits, Daniela is deeply committed to serving her community through her work and excited to help dedicated Boston natives return to college. With a passion and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, Daniela actively engages in volunteer activities both within her college community and city. Whether she’s participating in clubs, supporting her family, or immersing herself in nature and art, Daniela brings enthusiasm and a strong sense of purpose to everything she does. Through her dedication to academic excellence and her unwavering commitment to service, Daniela is making a positive impact and helping to create a brighter future for herself and her community. Marvin Valenzuela, Intern

Marvin Valenzuela is a recent graduate from Bunker Hill Community College, where he obtained his associate’s degree in communications. He will be transferring to a four-year university in Fall 2024 to pursue his bachelor’s degree. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and writing poetry and running. Thomas Arruda

Thomas Arruda is Vice President, Managed Accounts Investment Solutions at Fidelity Investments. He is responsible for the product strategy, development, management, and positioning of Fidelity’s managed account offering to retail, institutional, and workplace clients. Prior to assuming his current position, he worked in a variety of finance roles where his responsibilities included strategic and financial planning, board reporting, decision support, and product and pricing initiatives.
Prior to joining Fidelity, Tom worked as a management consultant at Accenture. He earned his B.S. from Babson College and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He is also a CFA charter holder and a Certified Financial Planner. Tom serves as the Clerk.

Elizabeth Cabrera

Liz brings over a decade of experience within the field of mental health and social services. She is passionate about empowering others to pursue their dreams and live happy, fulfilling lives. Liz is an alum of Northeastern University. She is grateful to all who supported her in earning degrees in the fields of psychology, human services and public policy. For fun, Liz enjoys listening to music, being outdoors, traveling, and time with family and friends.

Michele Carroll

Michele Carroll is the Chief Operating Officer at Duet, where she leads strategy for the  organization’s internal operations, people development and career services. Michele adds significant value to the Alray Scholars Program by helping to prepare and guide our graduates into jobs, and in fact, real careers. Michele received her BA from Howard University, and her Master’s from Simmons College. Michele is Chair of the Alray Nominating Committee.

Alia Crocker

Dr. Alia Crocker is an Associate Professor of Strategy in the management division at Babson College. She has been a longtime “Friend of Alray,” giving counsel to our organization on strategies for growth. She holds a Ph.D. degree in Management from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In addition, she has an MA degree from Boston University and a BS degree from Bentley University. Alia leads our strategic planning process and is co-chair of the Administration Committee.

Kevin Fudge

Kevin Fudge is the director of consumer advocacy and ombudsman at American Student Assistance. He works with policymakers, state agencies and non-profit organizations to increase college access, college completion, and successful education debt management. Kevin is a graduate of the University of Virginia and received his Master’s degree in Education Policy and Management from Harvard University. Kevin serves on our Administration Committee and our Applications Committee, and he is our in-house guru on matters of aid and debt.

Heidi Guarino

Heidi Guarino has spent her entire professional career in public education, first as an education reporter for local and national media outlets, and later as a senior leader in the development and communication of education policy in MA. She is the founder and principal of EdLab Strategies, where she works with clients in the K12 education sector to tell the stories of what works, ask the right questions to understand what doesn’t, and push for policies, investments and action to establish the meaningful, lasting improvements in our schools that all children deserve. Heidi earned her Bachelor’s degree from Emerson College and lives with her family in Salem, MA.

Lewis Okun

Lewis is an Alray mentor and passionate about education. He is committed to providing the opportunity for students to get a second chance at higher education. He is also an avid supporter of the Pan-Mass Challenge, riding for the cause since 2017. Lewis is a consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), specializing in mergers and acquisitions for Pharmaceutical & Life Sciences (PLS) companies.

Teresa Pina

Teresa Pina is an Alray Scholar graduate. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UMass Boston. She is a licensed Registered Nurse with an Associate’s degree in Nursing from Bunker Hill Community College. She has worked a non-clinical position in the Emergency Department at Mass General Hospital and is currently a nurse at Tufts Medical Center and Mass General Brigham. Teresa is the Vice Chair of the Applications Committee.

Noel Samu

Noel Samu is an Executive Director – Financial Reporting at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, NA. He has over 15 years of experience in the Investment Fund industry including financial statement, performance, regulatory and compliance reporting, talent management, audit, business analysis, change management, process optimization and automation. He is a CFA Charterholder and earned his Accounting degree from the University of South Africa. Noel who is a 2019 NICSA NOVA award winner in the Emerging Leaders category is a firm believer in the power of mentorship to broaden horizons. Noel serves as the Treasurer.

Neil Swidey

Neil Swidey founded the Alray Scholars Program with the help of friends and a shared determination to give promising students a second chance at college. He is a professor of the practice and director of the journalism program at Brandeis University and editor-at-large of the Boston Globe Magazine. He is also the bestselling author of Trapped Under the Sea and The Assist and a coauthor of Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy. His writing has been featured in The Best American Science Writing, The Best American Crime Writing, and The Best American Political Writing. (He has trouble sticking with a beat.) A graduate of Tufts University, Neil is President of our organization.

Jethro Trente et un

Jethro Trente et un has been an active member of the Alray Organization since 2013. After graduating from Charlestown High School, he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Bates College. He then went on to obtain his law degree from New England Law Boston. Jethro currently works as Intellectual Property Counsel at General Mills. He is passionate about recruiting new Alray Scholars and fueling the growth of the organization. He currently serves as Co-Chair of our Development Committee.

Hermese Velasquez

A native of Belize and a first-generation college graduate, Hermese has firsthand experience with the game changing power of education and the need for education equity. As Executive Director of Summer Search Boston, Hermese has supported staff and hundreds of young people expand what they believe is possible for themselves, their families, and their communities. During the warmer months, Hermese enjoys daily 5Ks while listening to Beyoncé and Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits! She also loves to travel and has traveled to 6 continents. 1 more to go!

Nancy White

Nancy White is a recently retired Tax Partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where she advised private and public corporations on their tax planning and compliance obligations. Nancy is a strategic thinker and has more than 29 years of experience developing and mentoring staff. In addition, Nancy has served as a board member and held leadership roles on several other nonprofit organizations in Massachusetts. Nancy is a CPA and received her BA from Connecticut College, and her MBA from Columbia Business School. Nancy is Co-Chair of our Development Committee.

Annalee Mendez

Annalee Mendez is a graduate of Salem State University and a former Boston Public School student. With a career background in higher education, she is passionate about supporting students in their academic journey and community engagement. She is currently the Senior Coordinator for the Community Affairs team at Vertex Pharmaceuticals where she is responsible for all external sponsorships and the new executive co-chair for their VIBE ERN. Outside of work, Annalee enjoys reading and traveling. She is also an advocate for volunteering and is currently a volunteer mentor for Boston Partners in Education. Annalee is our Net Impact Board Fellow for 2023-24.

 

Emeritus Board Members

Lisa Fliegel

Lisa, an Alray founding board member, is a trauma specialist and Boston-based writer who has worked internationally, including in Ireland, Israel and Palestine. She is a special clinical consultant to the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, a Boston nonprofit serving survivors of victims of homicide. Following the Boston Marathon Bombing, she worked with the Israel Trauma Coalition to provide services to survivors and bystanders.

Lisa spent her formative young adult years living at Kibbutz Ketura, a farm collective on Israel’s southern tip, and she earned her undergraduate degree in Hebrew Literature from the Tel-Aviv Teacher’s Seminary.

In 1996, she founded the Arts Incentives Program, a Greater Boston nonprofit was recognized by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention for its success in reducing disparities in minority contact in the juvenile justice system.

Lisa’s current book, Bulletproof Therapist, is drawn from her work dealing with trauma in Boston, Israel/Palestine, and Northern Ireland. Lisa leverages her deep expertise in counseling and mental health to provide pro bono guidance to the Alray program and our scholars.

Thaddeus Miles

Thaddeus Miles, an Alray founding board member and recipient of the Alray Community Leadership Award, is an author, award-winning photographer, and force for good in Greater Boston. He is the creator of the “BlackJoy Project,” which recently published To My Kin, an anthology of youth stories and poetry. The longtime director of Community Services at MassHousing, Thaddeus founded several nonprofits, including HoodFit, a cross-collaborative movement to amplify the positive attributes in communities of color. Hoodfit started Roxbury’s first 5k race, now an annual event in partnership with the Boston Athletic Association and the Dimmock Center.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Thaddeus has done work with Harvard Law School and MIT. He is co-chair of My Brother’s Keeper Boston and Chair of Becoming a Man (BAM), Boston and was named one of Boston’s Most Influential People of Color. He received the Embracing the Legacy Award from the Robert F. Kennedy Action Corp. and the Director’s Community Leadership Award from the FBI, among other honors. A devoted dad and grandfather, he remains a trusted and active senior advisor to the Alray team.

Jack O’Brien

Jack O’Brien, an Alray founding board member and recipient of the Alray Community Leadership Award, is a longtime teacher, coach and mentor. In a decade of coaching basketball at Charlestown High School, he led his teams to a record-breaking five state championships in six years. More important, during his tenure, nearly every one of his players who stayed with the Charletown program through his senior year went on to college. A graduate of Salem State College and a longtime educator in Boston Public Schools, Jack previously coached in Salem and his hometown of Medford. Irish America Magazine named him one of its Top 100 Irish-Americans. A champion mentor, Jack helped lead the Alray mentoring program and remains an active and trusted senior advisor.
