As a doctoral candidate at Harvard, the president of the Harvard Graduate council, and the Chair of a section at the American Public Health Association, Bryan Buckley uses his skills and shares them with his mentee, Jean.

“My grandpa always said that we have two things to do in this world,” Alray mentor Bryan Buckley says. “One is to make the world a better place with the skills that we’ve been given, and the other is to mentor the next generation to build on the work that we started.”

As a doctoral candidate at Harvard, the president of the Harvard Graduate council, and the Chair of a section at the American Public Health Association, Bryan uses his skills and shares them with his mentee, Jean. His position as a student enriches their relationship. “Everything I tell him, I’m doing as well,” He says. “We should be graduating at the same time. I learn a lot from him, too. Although he’s had so many hits in life, one thing I celebrate is his grit and his ability to keep moving forward.”

“I always tell people that mentorship is like giving people the guidance you wish you’d had,” He says, “or if you did have the guidance, sharing it with people that didn’t have that privilege.” Bryan meets with other Alray mentors on a quarterly basis to discuss ideas on how to impart that guidance.

As for one of his strategies, Bryan says he is a strong believer in mantras. “I tell my mentee all of the time: be hungry, be humble, and be curious,” He says. “You should forever be a scholar.”
